Revolution:Cloud chronicles the evolution of Cloud Computing, tracking the daily industry news that is rapidly changing the world of computing.

We are completing a book, to be published by Apress early in 2010. For more information, please visit: http://www.apress.com/book/view/9781430227243

In these pages, you will find news, opinions, trends, and stories from the front-lines of the Cloud Computing revolution. To quote Beck: “Things are gonna change; I can feel it.” We couldn’t agree more.

Over the last several years, the emergence of Cloud Computing platforms has dramatically changed the way we do business — from powering a web application to checking our email — this growing trend has moved information out of our desks and offices and into the ubiquitous cloud. This shift may seem frightening at first, but we believe we are compelled by a certain familiarity — a feeling that this metamorphosis has happened before. And to a certain degree it has.

We have already witnessed similar trends, such as the beginning of the 20th century when companies turned off their internal power plants and signed up for centralized electrical power instead. Electricity changed from an expensive core competency to a ubiquitous commodity.

Today, we think of electric power as a utility, or perhaps a natural resource, not unlike water or gas. Its growth and demand has spurred a vast network of wiring and infrastructure that makes electric power accessible anywhere, at a cost that is so negligible, companies rarely even factor it into expense reports.

The ubiquity of electricity has made this utility transparent to the point that other technologies and entire industries have emerged and grown. We are about to witness a similar evolution with Cloud Computing. Cloud platforms provide centralized computing resources that are more reliable and less expensive than the traditional options. As companies and consumers rely more on the Cloud, this trend will continue, further reducing costs and increasing reliability — and fostering the growth of the networks that will make computing power even more accessible and faster.

And pretty soon, we won’t think of Cloud Computing as Cloud Computing. It will transform into a commodity, just like electricity, water, and gas.

This change is intriguing, but even more exciting are the effects of this revolution. What will the ubiquity and accessibility of computing power bring? What new industry or trend is waiting around the corner for its shot at transforming the world — once computing power has reached a pinnacle of availability and reliability, and a nadir of cost. We are just as anxious to find out what’s next, and we assure you that you will be able to provide you a front-and-center view of these stories within the pages of this site.
